About Chess

Chess is the world's oldest and most revered strategy game, with origins traceable to 6th-century India where it was known as Chaturanga. It spread through Persia, the Arab world, and into medieval Europe, evolving into the modern game recognised today. With an estimated 600 million active players worldwide, chess transcends language, culture, and age like no other game.

Unlike games of chance, chess is a pure battle of minds — every outcome is a direct result of the decisions both players make. Our implementation features a minimax engine with alpha-beta pruning and piece-square evaluation tables, giving you a genuine challenge at three difficulty levels.

How to Play

  1. Setup: Choose your colour and difficulty, then press New Game. White always moves first. The board flips automatically when you play as Black.
  2. Moving: Click any of your pieces to select it — legal moves are shown as dots (empty squares) or rings (captures). Click a highlighted square to move there.
  3. Special moves: Castling and en passant are fully supported. When your pawn reaches the back rank a promotion dialog appears — pick Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight.
  4. Check & Checkmate: Your king's square turns red when in check. You must resolve check immediately. Checkmate ends the game — the checked king has no legal escape.
  5. Undo: Takes back your last move and the CPU's reply together, restoring the position to before your move.
  6. Hint: The engine suggests a move by highlighting it on the board. Use sparingly — finding your own moves is more satisfying and develops your game!

Strategy Tips

  • Control the centre: Occupy or influence e4, e5, d4, d5 early — centrally placed pieces are far more powerful than those stuck on the edges.
  • Develop before attacking: Move knights and bishops out in the opening before launching any attack. Don't move the same piece twice unless you have to.
  • Castle early: Tuck your king behind a pawn barrier. An exposed king is the biggest weakness the engine will exploit.
  • Think in trades: Knight (3) for Rook (5) is winning the exchange. Bishop pair vs two knights is a subtle but real long-term edge in open positions.
  • Passed pawns win endgames: A pawn with no opposing pawns in its path is a potential queen — advance and support it relentlessly once the endgame arrives.
  • Patience beats impatience: On Hard the engine looks 3 moves deep. Solid, patient play will outlast a rushed attack every single time.
