About FreeCell

FreeCell is a remarkably skill-based solitaire variant invented by Paul Alfille in 1978 and popularised by Microsoft's Windows version in the 1990s. Unlike most solitaire games, almost every single deal — roughly 99.999% of them — is solvable with correct play. There are no hidden cards and no luck once the cards are dealt.

The four "free cells" in the top-left act as temporary holding spaces, and mastering when to use and when to free them is the heart of FreeCell strategy. Experienced players can solve deals in their heads before touching a card.

How to Play

  1. Setup: All 52 cards are dealt face-up into 8 tableau columns — columns 1–4 get 7 cards each, columns 5–8 get 6 cards each.
  2. Free Cells: The four cells (top-left) each hold one card temporarily. Use them to manoeuvre cards out of the way.
  3. Foundations: Build each of the four foundations (top-right) from Ace up to King in the same suit.
  4. Tableau moves: Move one card at a time onto a tableau column if it is one rank lower and the opposite colour — just like Klondike. Empty columns accept any card.
  5. Supermoves: You can move a sequence of cards in one drag if you have enough free cells and empty columns. The formula: (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns) cards maximum.
  6. Win: Move all 52 cards to the foundations. Every card is visible from the start — plan your moves carefully!

Strategy Tips

  • Scan all 8 columns before your first move — plan at least 5 moves ahead.
  • Keep free cells empty as long as possible; they're your most valuable resource.
  • Build foundations evenly — having one suit far ahead can strand cards of other suits.
  • Empty columns are power — sacrifice material to create one and you unlock supermoves.
